Musicians of Ma'alwyck and Cohoes Music Hall announce 2010-2011 Artistic Collaboration.
The Musicians of Ma'alwyck chamber music ensemble and the Cohoes Music Hall have agreed to present three concerts by the ensemble in the historic theatre during the 2010-2011 season. The two popular organizations will join forces as they continue to enrich the cultural life of the Capital District. The creative energy behind the idea comes from Ann Marie Barker-Schwartz, Jim Charles, and Tony Rivera. Barker-Schwartz is the founding Artistic Director of the Musicians of Ma'alwyck, now in their tenth season of performing music of the 19th and 20th Centuries as it was heard historically in New York State. Charles and Rivera are C-R Productions, the theatre company which has brought life to the historic Cohoes Music Hall for the past seven seasons. The three chamber music concerts will be interspersed among six musical theatre performances, adding a new dimension for patrons of both organizations. "The more we talked about it, the more sense it made," said Barker-Schwartz. "The Cohoes Music Hall was first active from 1874 to 1921, which is a big part of the period from which we draw our music. The theatre has great acoustics and looks beautiful." Charles noted that "our mission is to keep this wonderful theatre alive with activity as many nights as we can. We think that the chamber music concerts will appeal to our subscribers, and we hope that Musicians of Ma'alwyck followers will also come to a few musicals." The chamber concerts will be on Saturday nights at the Cohoes Music Hall on September 24, February 5, and June 4. The Musicians of Ma'alwyck, in residence at the 1761 Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site and at Schenectady County Community College, was founded by violinist Ann-Marie Barker Schwartz in 1999. The ensemble was named the "Best Chamber Music Ensemble of the Capital Region" for both 2008 and 2009 by Metroland, has received national attention for its opera productions and has been featured on Public Radio broadcasts. The Musicians of Ma'alwyck will continue to perform at the historic Schuyler Mansion of Albany in October and April, and to offer concert previews at SCCC and occasional special performances. C-R Productions has been running the Cohoes Music Hall since 2003, building a solid subscriber base and a powerful reputation for creating outstanding musical theatre in the Capital District. The theatre was built in 1874 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It operated as a vaudeville and concert venue until 1905, after which it remained boarded up for nearly 70 years. The City of Cohoes purchased the building in 1969 for one dollar. It was renovated and re-opened in 1974. Through a collaborative agreement with the City of Cohoes, C-R Productions has been producing regularly in the theatre since 2003.
