Staging and Costumes Make Carousel A Visual Feast
From the moment you enter the theater at Cohoes Music Hall for C-R Productions’ Carousel, you know you’re in good hands. The cast is uniformly gifted, the voices soaring. The familiar songs are beautifully acted. Jason Fleck’s first act “Soliloquy” is masterfully accomplished. Jeannie Shubitz shines in her duet with Fleck “If I Loved You”. When the ensemble sings “June Is Bustin’ Out All Over”, it feels so right!

Here is area theatregoers’ last chance to savor a production at Cohoes Music Hall until C-R Productions opens its sixth season in August. Carousel is a showcase of talent that lingers in memory thanks to the polished performances by cast, musicians, set designers, and costumers. Jason Fleck and Jeannie Shutiz’s beautiful voices and genuine emotion make the roles of Billy and Julie both believable and impressive. Director Jim Charles has done a supurb job, as always. Take a tip from one of top tunes, stop “Wonderin” and go see for yourself what a great job C-R Productions continues to achieve.

Voices Make Carousel Songs Memorable
There are those who claim "Carousel" to be the best musical ever written. I think the production at Cohoes Music Hall, which runs through May 18, indicates the show has one of the best scores ever written. Jason Fleck who plays Billy Bigelow has the voice for the role. Jeannie Shubitz, who plays Julie, takes a character who could be viewed as a weak and needy woman and lets the audience see her inner beauty that makes her love for this loser palatable. Fleck and Shubitz’ "If I Loved You" is heartbreakingly beautiful and his "Soliloquy" number is powerful. The supporting cast is also strong. Emily Casale is a delight as Julie’s best friend Carrie. She’s a superior singer and establishes a playful interaction with her boyfriend/husband Matin C. Hurt who wisely doesn’t make the fussy Enoch Snow a negative person. Tony Rivera does a great job making the villainous Jigger both evil and comic. The ensemble adds luster to big numbers like "June is Bustin’ Out All Over" and "A Real Nice Clambake." The ballet sequence choreographed by Jessica Costa and expertly performed by Kasey Scanlon and Robert Teasdale, is a visual treat. The youngsters in the cast are talented charmers with Alison Lehane and Kelly Swint making genuine contributions beyond their cuteness.
